Current State

Baseline architecture, stack, repository context and known friction.

Architecture & system context

This is a research delivery. Our client, a policy unit, needs the current state of research on algorithmic decision-support in sentencing and parole, with sources gathered, appraised, synthesised into themes, gaps and conclusions. I have collected rough reading notes on six seed papers on the docs branch.

Tech stack, frameworks & versions

  • Markdown reading notes (six seed papers)
  • APA 7 citation style
  • On-premises document repository

Known issues, error logs & friction

The six reading notes are fragmentary and inconsistent, and some citation details are uncertain. We need a structured review that traces every claim to a verifiable source and marks anything uncertain rather than guessing.

Research topic & existing materials

Algorithmic decision-support in sentencing and parole: recidivism-risk instruments, pretrial risk-assessment validation, sentencing-guideline algorithm audits, parole-board decision support, fairness-metric debates, and transparency and reporting standards. Six rough per-paper notes are on the docs branch.

03

Target State

Deliverable expectations, measurable benchmarks and definition of done.

Deliverable expectations

A structured literature review for a non-technical policy audience, citing at least fifteen verifiable sources beyond the six seed papers, appraised into themes with an explicit gap list, led by a one-page plain-language executive summary, in APA 7 style.

Quantifiable benchmarks & success metrics

At least fifteen additional verifiable sources; each traceable to a claim; themes with an explicit gap list; APA 7 in-text and reference list; uncertain details marked.

Definition of done

The review cites at least fifteen additional sources, appraises them into themes with gaps, leads with a one-page summary, uses APA 7 throughout, and marks uncertain citation details.

Research questions, audience, citation style & target length

Questions: what does the evidence say about the accuracy and fairness of these tools; what do independent audits and validation studies find; and what transparency and reporting standards apply? Audience: a non-technical policy unit. Citation style: APA 7.

04

Constraints

Forbidden changes, compliance, regions, freeze windows and deadlines.

Forbidden modifications & boundaries

Do not fabricate citations, page ranges or digital object identifiers; where a detail is uncertain, mark it as to be verified. Keep the review to the stated topic.

Compliance standards

  • None apply

Approved regions & environments

  • On-premises research repository

Freeze windows & blackout periods

No production changes Fri 17:00 to Mon 08:00 NZST.

Pinned libraries, versions & standards

Use APA 7; keep the output in Markdown; cite only verifiable published works.

Target deadline or milestone

30 October, before the policy unit's briefing.

Methodology, source constraints & exclusions

Structured narrative review with a source-appraisal matrix; include only verifiable published works, prefer recent sources, and exclude vendor marketing material. Mark any uncertain citation detail explicitly.
